Teemu, thanks for the report back. A few BOINC projects have had some problems of late -- glad this one is resolved (for now).

Still no explanation of the troika of outages this past week. That isn't, shall we say, confidence inspiring....

Happened again this morning -- for a much shorter time. I'm simply letting my clients complete existing work and move over to MW, Collatz, and POEM and World Grid.

Perhaps we will get some information regarding the outages.

Moo has been very reliable, that offsets somewhat the lack of information that is made available to users.

Teemu, one request -- PLEASE don't go to OpenCL -- I have a large investment in HD 4850 cards and it seems OpenCL and HD 4850 cards is a poor match.

Teemu -- thanks for the extensive reply -- it is definitely appreciated.

I expect load here will back off -- not only with credits returning to normal, but also with MW going back online.

Also, POEM is just about to have production running GPU support as well (currently it is supporting folks willing to do some additional handling so that GPU processes for them). Though over at POEM I expect they may lament the change over, they already had some problems having enough work to hand out, and with GPU support, that available work may really be a constraint.

There was a temporary burp here about an hour ago (9:30AM Pacific time in the US) -- I suspect you were doing some work on the servers over there.

I suspect a number of folks here have noticed (but not commented on) reporting lags and validation lags that have become the norm over the past week or so.

Part of that may have been a batch of new users attracted by the 'Santa Claus' credit boost (which has now been corrected it seems).

Another piece of the suspected load increase might be folks temporarily migrating from MilkyWay as they move to a new server and then figure out what it is they need to do to have it communicate properly.

Unlike MW though, Moo is a very light project in terms of support and communications people (person singular?) so we shouldn't expect to see much information here about what is going on.

Further, even more than MW, with the relatively low user count here, traffic on the message boards tends to be quite sparse.
31) Message boards : Number crunching : Validator Down ? (Message 2017)

Could well be -- we are all in supposition mode of course.

For a while earlier this morning it seemed things were catching up, but in the past hour, credits have 'frozen' (ie a backlog building) -- the thing is, during the freezes, my pending credits stay at zero -- a bit confusing.

I am sure all will be made clear in the fullness of time......

My work is getting validated, but very slowly and with 15% less credit. So it looks like Teemu is reducing credit step by step to the level before Santa's credit raise.

Seems that something like that is messed up -- I've reported a batch of completed work and they are not even making it into pendings from what I can see -- just going into a black hole.
33) Message boards : Number crunching : News on Aqua Outage (Message 781)

Aqua recovered from that problem but encountered a major credit dysfunction with the controlled 'credits from BOINC central' award system. As a result wildly varying credits were being awarded.

My understanding is that you folks tested the 'new credit scheme' (is that the Cromwell New Model Army?) -- found it seriously flawed and were able to opt out while running BOINC server code.

Personally, I don't it is a good idea to compel projects to an externally derived credit system as I honestly don't expect the code from a central developing group to be able to handle (or even understand) all the variables presented by millions of users, scores of projects, and thousands of different types of work units -- even as a snap shot, let alone the very much moving target presented by the BOINC distributed processing environment.

Oops, that's a scary. I've certainly made my share of such mistakes in my sysadmin career so I can (at least somewhat) understand how that Aqua admin is feeling right about now. :( I'm sure they can recover from it, though.

But that reminds me that I need to make sure MY backups are going through successfully.. :)

With the apparent demise of dnet (perhaps the 3rd ending over there is the real one), I've relocated the GPU cycles over here
