They are talking of my neck of the World looking a bit like snowy Finland for a few hours later today and tomorrow, then POOF it will all be gone again as the temps get back into the mid 40's F and it all melts away!! I am WINNING as I am staying inside and warm!!!
No winter here yet, but it will come with blizzard, icy roads and disasters and lots of snow to christmas! Winning!
I m in the 'Mid-Atlantic' region of the US, meaning near Washington DC, and I don't get too hot in the summer nor does it get too cold in the winter. I get bits of each, so not exactly the Goldilocks zone but close enough for me.

I have a question? I saw a very disturbing tv-programm yesterday about gasdrilling in Pennsylvania. The gascompanies could drill without consequencies on private property because you are not the owner of the ground under your house. They inject water in the shaleshaft to start a gasproduction. They make a well and start pumping the produced gas. The akvifer is damaged by chemicals injected in the well. The drinking water is not useable and so on. Do you have any knowledge about this and is it true that a company can act in this way?
You can answer in an E-mail if you find it more convinient.

Yes all of that is true, but not in every well. As in most things the answer is 'yes, but...'. It is called "fracking" and the idea is that in America few people actually own the mineral rights under the ground of their own homes. Some do, but not most people. What happens in "fracking" is the oil companies, not usually the ones you hear about on tv but instead much smaller ones that then sell the oil to the ones you hear about on tv, contract with the mineral rights holder, often the person who built your neighborhood, to try and reclaim oil that is trapped under ground in very small pockets. The way they do that is drill a well and inject hot liquid into the well melting the very sludgy oil and then bringing it back up the same, or another, drill hole. As the water goes in it finds it way into all the cracks and crevices and can find its way into peoples water wells too, taking some of the now melted oil with it. This ends up making your home water well too contaminated to drink causing major problems for those people.
As I said though this only happens sometimes and often only when the oil well is dug too close to the water well, some people don't care but the rules are changing. The actual idea of "fracking" is not new, but the application of it is, so the laws haven't kept up yet. Apparently the Earth is full of little cracks and the hot water goes everywhere and anywhere depending on the pressure you are using to force it into the well and the depth of the well. Meaning a 500 foot deep well running at 250psi is likely to cause much more damage then a 150 foot deep well running at 50psi would. Also the laws are now being written, to cover even previous damage caused, by the drillers that are 'wild catting' drilling everywhere and anywhere. Some drill companies actually drilled within 50 feet of a water well and then claimed it wasn't their fault when oil came out of the water well. They are now being put out of business thru lawsuits and other means and more reputable business practices are starting to take over.
Even though the people living on the land do NOT own the mineral rights they DO own the top surface of the ground, so the oil companies ARE paying them something to be able to put a drill on their land. As is usual though some people get alot and some people get a little.
I live in a neighborhood surrounding a 110 acre lake and 1200 homes, I do NOT own the mineral rights under the ground though, and the same is true of all of my neighbors too. So if gold/oil/whatever were found here we could all be bought out and some mining company could come in and make a fortune while all I would get is the value of my home and be forced to move out. Now of course they can't dig on my property as I own the top surface of the land, so they would have to pay my price to get my home. But my neighbor has a price too and while I could hold out he could sell for less and they could dig thru his lot to get under my home. I would guess the same is true where you live in the bigger neighborhoods and towns and cities.

Thanks Mikey for a very clear explanation about my question.
In sweden we have a lot of slathe but we are not using natural gas for heating.
I drilled a waterwell in may for about 168m. I have a heatingsystem that takes a couple of degrees of the water temperature, compress it by a special equipment, produce hotwater for my radiators and for bath and so on. Send back water with a temperature of + 5 deg back in to the well. In the tube that are in the drillhole there is an alcohol called brinefluid that is used to take care of the watertemp. I save a lot for my heating about 20.000 kwh on a yearly basis. With a price of 1,50 kr per kwh it is really a bargain. SO I AM WINNING!
