Hi,

there is an existing post with the same theme but it is closed.

I just added Moo! Wrapper to my apple MAC mini, I see the CPU usage is 95-100% for the initial task (WU dnetc_r72_1375246442_9_9). This means the cooling fan runs like crazy. For now the WU is suspended.

The MAC is running BOINC 7.0.65 which is the latest stable release.

I support the concept of allowing use of my unused computing resources but also I want to be in control and the BOINC CPU settings let me manage CPU temperature vs WU processing.

For me this is set in BOINC to 100% CPUs and 40% for processing time and is then under the threshold for the cooling fan to kick in and allows me to also work with the MAC.

I have run Moo! Wrapper WUs on my windows PC earlier this month and did not notice this issue.

Is any other MAC user finding the same?

regards,

I think what you are seeing is how programers differ...the Boinc programers decided that the 40%, in your case, means run at 100% for 4 clock cycles then idle for 6 clock cycles, AVERAGING 40%. So yes your fan will scream then it should back off and then it should scream again. The scream and back off cycles will be pretty short as a clock cycles is pretty short too!

You said you have a Mac Mini, isn't that the small box computer? Providing better airflow around your pc will help move the heat away from, ala a small fan. A couple of small cushions, hard or soft, as feet might raise it up off the desktop too, giving space for air to flow underneath the unit. It's a small compact computer and now you are stressing it towards the max by running it hard. I think it can take it, but some better cooling wouldn't hurt.
