Hi people. I have a problem I can download WU's for MooWrapper but they don't run. I have tried suspending all gpu tasks that come up. Then Boinc downloads more MooWrapper WU's and still doesn't start any of them. What's up with this?

Probably your settings that Boinc doesn't run until less then 25% of your cpu is being used, or that the gpu isn't used while you are using the pc. Go into the Boinc Manager, down by the clock, and double click it, then click on Tools, computing preferences, then click on the processor usage tab, there are several check boxes at the top, put checkmarks in the all of them. Then go two lines down where it says 'while processor usage is less than' and put a zero in that box. Click ok at the bottom to save the settings and the crunching should start right up. What you just did was set Boinc to run 24/7 no matter what.

IF this becomes a problem come back to that page and uncheck the bottom box and put a 3.00 in the idle box, that will stop your gpu from crunching while you are using the pc, and then wait for 3 minutes after you stop using it to start back up again. Using it INCLUDES just moving the mouse around the desktop!

The line where you put the zero is also about making the pc more usable, the number represents how much cpu must be free for Boinc to run at all, this includes both cpu and gpu crunching. For instance the default of 25 means that when you open a webpage Boinc stops as it uses alot of your cpu, and then releases it once the page is open waiting for your net click. Boinc would then run as the pc is sort of idling. You can put any number you like in the box, but the smaller the number the less cpu must be free for Boinc to run.

Boinc Manager settings are all correct still doesn't start MooWrapper WU's. Maybe it's a bug with Moowrapper?

Did you by chance install Boinc as a Service? If so that won't allow you to run gpu units. Or are you trying to run it under multiple logins perhaps?

I can run GPU wu's and If I run under multiple logins (user account and admin account), the second account says GPU's not available (beside all GPU related tasks). So I know that when I normally run bonic manager and client under user account (but run it as admin so no resources problems occur) this also allows boinc to detect my GPU's so I know this isn't the problem. I believe the problem is associated with how the scheduler operates. The details from the properties window of what one of my problem WU's that doesn't start is as follows:

Properties of task dnetc_r72_1367690798_4_192_0
Application: Distributed.net Client 1.03 (cuda31)
Workunit Name: dnetc_r72_1367690798_4_192
State: Ready to start
Received: 13/05/2013 1:21:28 AM
Report Due: 15/05/2013 4:26:46PM
Resources: 0.2 CPUs + 2 NVIDIA GPUs
Estimated computation size: 336,000 GFLOPs

I have 2 NVIDIA Geforce GTX 460 GPUs, I also Have a 26 inch monitor connected to one of my Graphics cards. What is the best way to make this application run on one of my GPU's or what is the technical specifications to run it on 2 GPU's.

When the deadline for these problem WU's passes, boinc uploads the task (not completed) and the corresponding error message on the server is "Not started by deadline - canceled".

WINDOWS does NOT allow a 2nd user to have access to the gpu on a crunching or gaming level, so your problem is that you are using Windows. There is no way that I am aware of to get around this. The only solution would be to use a single login, or have multiple instances of Boinc and each user crunches their own units. When I setup a new pc I always tell to allow all users to use Boinc, But I do not think that means the gpu too.

To make both gpu's run you will need a cc_config.xml file, made in NOTEPAD ONLY and saved as a txt type file with the extension xml. The contents would be:
<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
<skip_cpu_benchmarks>1</skip_cpu_benchmarks>
</options>
</cc_config>

This file should be placed in the C:\Program Data\Boinc directory and Boinc stopped and then restarted.

I use a single login so there is no problem there, I have done what you suggested and currently waiting to see if the Wu's run. I will reply after the deadline passes if it works or not. Hopefully this helps.

I don't understand then, you said "I can run GPU wu's and If I run under multiple logins (user account and admin account)" but now say you only use a single login? I am missing something there, unless you mean NOW you are only using a single login.

I HOPE it all works for you!!

Ok the deadline has passed. I'm still not getting the WU's to start. I have always been using a single login (under my user account, and run boinc manager as admin), I only ran bonic manager under both to troubleshoot and see where you where coming from. I now know that all of that wasn't applicable to my situation (wasn't the cause of my Moo wrapper WU's not to start). I'm still puzzled as to why this is still not working right. Do you have any more suggestions? It's only the GPU applications on MOO Wrapper project that I'm having this problem. The GPU apps for the other projects work fine. I've turned on scheduler debug and found something interesting MOO Wrapper 15/05/2013 5:28:40 PM Scheduler request failed: Couldn't resolve hostname.

I think I understand, thanks.

I see you have two gpu's in the machine do they both work at other gpu projects? Also when you first start Boinc there are some lines in the Event Log that talk about the gpu, this is a laptop but the lines say:
5/15/2013 10:32:22 AM | | OpenCL: Intel GPU 0: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (driver version 9.18.10.3071, device version OpenCL 1.2, 1624MB, 1624MB available, 45 GFLOPS peak)
5/15/2013 10:32:22 AM | ABC@home | URL http://abcathome.com/; Computer ID 236609; resource share 100
5/15/2013 10:32:22 AM | rosetta@home | URL http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/; Computer ID 1592968; resource share 50
5/15/2013 10:32:22 AM | eon2 | URL http://eon.ices.utexas.edu/eon2/; Computer ID 39736; resource share 100
5/15/2013 10:32:22 AM | malariacontrol.net | URL http://www.malariacontrol.net/; Computer ID 616646; resource share 10

You can see it finds an Intel HD graphics 4000 opencl device and then come some lines about each projects I am connected to. What are your lines?

One other thing to try is to do a manual update for Moo and see what the Event Log says. Does it say something like:
5/15/2013 6:43:30 PM | ABC@home | update requested by user
5/15/2013 6:43:34 PM | ABC@home | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
5/15/2013 6:43:34 PM | ABC@home | Requesting new tasks for intel_gpu
5/15/2013 6:43:36 PM | ABC@home | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

Or are there some error messages? If there are some error messages I would do a Project Reset which would dump all existing tasks, they aren't running anyway so who cares. This would cause the project to resend you all the files Moo uses as well as some more workunits. In some cases this can fix the problems as most of the project files are replaced.

Ok, this is what the event log says with a filter on Moo Wrapper

Thank you!

This is what I think is the answer:
15/05/2013 1:06:58 AM | | Config: use all coprocessors
15/05/2013 1:06:58 AM | | Config: don't compute while sdclt.exe is running
15/05/2013 1:06:58 AM | | Config: don't compute while The Da Vinci Code.exe is running

The above lines say use all gpu's and then you tell Boinc to NOT crunch when sdclt and Da Vinci Code are running.

This is what I get after a simple search for what sdclt.exe is:
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/sdclt/413818/

As for the Da Vinci Code is that a language translator?

Then I see this several times:
15/05/2013 4:58:33 AM | | Windows is suspending operations
15/05/2013 4:58:33 AM | | Suspending computation - requested by operating system
15/05/2013 4:58:33 AM | | Suspending network activity - requested by operating system
15/05/2013 4:58:50 AM | | Resuming after OS suspension

15/05/2013 12:38:25 PM | | Suspending computation - an exclusive app is running
15/05/2013 12:38:25 PM | | Suspending network activity - an exclusive app is running
15/05/2013 12:38:55 PM | | Resuming computation
15/05/2013 12:38:55 PM | | Resuming network activity

That concerns me, it means for some reason Windows is telling Boinc to stop crunching. I am guessing it has to do with the 'while processor usage is less then' setting and the exclusive apps running. This shows up several times on the lists.

These lines mean you are not using the Boinc Manager to adjust the settings but instead using the projects webpages and WCG is the one that thinks it is in charge.
15/05/2013 1:07:01 AM | | Fetching configuration file from http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/get_project_config.php
15/05/2013 1:07:08 AM | | Fetching configuration file from http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/get_project_config.php

This tells me the problem could be Windows related, or how Windows is controlling things:
15/05/2013 11:44:32 PM | | Suspending network activity - requested by operating system
15/05/2013 11:44:44 PM | | Resuming after OS suspension
15/05/2013 11:45:46 PM | | Resuming computation
15/05/2013 11:45:46 PM | | Resuming network activity
15/05/2013 11:45:58 PM | | Windows is resuming operations
15/05/2013 11:49:26 PM | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
15/05/2013 11:49:28 PM | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

The internet always seems to be not on when things come back on again after the "OS suspension" but then it says "Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down." So it is trying to connect but then when it doesn't have internet pretty quickly it is failing to connect to Moo but then can connect to the "reference site". The "reference site" is usually Yahoo, or something basic like that, and is just checking to see if your internet is working.

Are you letting the pc sleep or otherwise letting it not crunch? Are you using a screensaver for example?

I don't see any problems with the reset process.

The Da Vinci Code is a game. I do let the computer sleep which is why I do get a lot of os suspension and recovery this also affects my internet connectivity basically it shuts down to save power when I resume it takes a while before my internet comes back online. After reading this I doesn't appear something wrong is with the scheduler. Now I have 3 questions which are 1) When the deadline passes I do not click on abort Wu's, The computer aborts the WU's, why does this happen only for Moo wrapper. 2) Under the WU's in question it says it needs 0.2 CPU's and 2 NVIDIA GPU's, yes I do have 2 NVIDIA GPU's but there is a Monitor connected to 1 of my GPU's Maybe this is interfering with freeing up enough resources to work these WU's. 3) I would like to let bonic manager to adjust the settings. How do I change this, I did for a moment change this to let World Community grid to control this, now I want bonic manager to do this. I think once I do this that some of my problems that I'm having will disappear. And as a final note, my Moo Wrapper WU's still do not start.

Okay in order here:
1) It SHOULD happen for all projects but some are just more aggressive then others. There are some quirks in the system that will allow a late unit to get credits and some projects still allow for that possibility. Moo doesn't and aborts your unit when the replacement unit is sent out.

2) Having a monitor is normal and Windows then detects that gpu as 'available', in SOME cases we need a line in an app_config file to tell Windows to NOT disable the that does not have a monitor connected to it. But if yours are being detected by Boinc then you are probably okay. Windows turns things off if it doesn't think they will be used to save 'resources'.

3) You must go into the Boinc Manager, down by the clock, and manually adjust it and then clock ok afterwards. Then that pc is , in most cases, a stand alone entity to the projects. There ARE a few projects that still read your specs and tries to translate them to all other pc's, but once you find a happy bunch of settings that will be okay anyway.

As for you not running the pc 24/7 that is okay, but it is probably better to lower your cache level to a point where you stop aborting units. This will just cause you to connect to each project more often. I run a cpu project that often runs out of work, so I have a 2nd project but have it set at 0%. This means it ONLY gets work when the 1st project doesn't have any, and I usually get 1 unit at a time as I only use 1 cpu core on that machine. So I get a unit and then get a new one when I return the 1st one back to the project when it is done crunching.

One last thing to try then, turn off the game and anything else the pc is doing in the background too, then go in and suspend every project except Moo and see if it will run. Give it a few minutes of inactivity, just in case one of the settings is telling it to wait, but leave Boinc open and on the screen so you can see if Moo starts. Give it maybe 20 minutes, turn the screensaver off first, for now. If it runs then turn the screensaver back on and see if it still runs, you will probably have to check the times as the screen saver may prevent you from seeing Boinc. If it still doesn't run then something else is preventing it.

I finally got the WU's to start. Yay, now I have a different question. I'm connected to 70 projects (a few of them don't work with my computer), most of the projects work. Now for my question, What is the best way to let each project download only 1 work unit. Keep in mind that I do have a quad core i5 64 bit processor meaning sometimes I can have as many as 8 WU going at the same time (this is as many I've seen going). Obviously there are fewer large WU running at the same time. I've also setup boinc manager an equal number of resources for each project (1.51%) except for the problem projects which are only (0.02%). Hopefully I can change the preferences in one file, update boinc one time and presto, otherwise I will have to do it for each of my projects that I'm connected to which will be a drag. Hope to hear back from you soon with how to do this.

SORRY it is project by project and on each ones own webpage under You Account. What I would do, good grief 70 is pick a few and concentrate on them for the next month, or other time frame, then move to a next batch and continue until you have crunched for all of them over the course of the next year. That way Boinc only has to worry about 5 or so at a time. If you favor one project over another then you can give it a slightly higher percentage and keep it running longer, but trying to get Boinc to manage 70 projects all at once is asking ALOT!! I for instance have 15 pc's running and concentrate on achieving goals at just a few different projects and then move on to the next one. Here at Moo for example I got to 1 billion credits and have moved my pc's elsewhere, my rac is decaying and will eventually dwindle away to zero. I was able to achieve my goal of 1 billion credits in about 1.5 years by focusing my work. I will let my signature come thru today so you can see what I mean by focusing.
