The 7970s are not running at Moo. Tried with 2 x 7970 on crossfire on my 1090T box. They always get to 22 secs and fail with communications error. I have tried detatch and re-atatch, still the same. If a tester needed for any recompiles etc, yell I'll do it Regards Zy |

Its not really a surprise given the different (long term) Architecture, GCN. It'll pan out in a couple of weeks as the points of failure are identified, especially as most BOINC AMD apps are maths based. POEM runs ok on it, if you fancy a medical based model. Utilisation is low unlike here where its high (usually), so running an app_info is essential at POEM with a 7970 (POEM utilisation is 18% without an app_info using the 7970s there. Its pretty well the only one running for a 7970 at present. Regards Zy |

I plan, pocket book allowing, to purchase an HD7990 towards October or after. I hope the problems are sorted by then for BOINC, BOINC Manager and the ATI drivers. |

Towards the end of October 2012? By then you'll have worry about the 8970. LOL. |

7970 up and running at MW if anyone has one. See the "7970 dont run" thread (ironically). For the moment its running an NVidia OpenCL app on the 7970s, instructions at end of that thread. Regards Zy |

Ouch, they seem to fail with "Core compilation failed. Exiting." error. I'm going to report to and work with upstream devs to see if there's something we can do to fix this. (I'm sure there is, but when and how hard it is are the main questions.) Oh, almost forgot. Thanks for reporting this! :) -w |

Its the support given by 7970s (or more precisely zero support) to CAL apps. Its (at the moment) OpenCL or nothing - I cant see them going back on that as CAL is now a dead donkey and dropped. The performance of the hardware though is phenominal - the 7970 runs the MW NVidia OpenCL app faster than a 6970 runs the normal MW AMD CAL app! For the Gaming side of the equation, sprint, dont walk, and get one! The hardware power is incredible. As always, its software that rules the day - there will be more of this as time goes on and the AMD transition to OpenCL takes hold. Regards Zy |

Ah, then that'll mean it just won't work for now. At least until DCTI gets an OpenCL client developed, which might not happen anytime soon. :( -w |

We may find that newer driver revisions include CAL support as a legacy app measure, and this is just deployment driver (they are after all focused on gamers and OpenCL/CAL is not an issue in their Prime Market). Somehow I reckon thats more hope than reality :) I think your right about upstream, they will push back on an OpenCL app until they see AMD clients going walkies, which will take a while - circa 6 months, but walkies will happen if this CAL situation remains extant as existing apps will not have CAL support at AMD developer level, and inevitably degrade over the long term. A possible bright spot on the horizon is (maybe?) all the additional tools and software tools that GCN allows to be brought into play .... maybe .... that will help, I have no idea as I am not a programmer at that level. The brave new world of OpenCL rofl :) Regards Zy |

That doesn't sound good for the near future, I have some 7970's coming but may cancel them. I don't need anymore $500+ Cards sitting around that are only good at 1 or 2 Projects ... :/ |

Its difficult to know precisely the situation, but its fluid enough for me to rethink 7990 if the OpenCL and CAL question has not settled down by then. The 2x7970s I have now were for more than BOINC reasons, so I'm fine with that, but my main box is pure BOINC, different ball game and the reason I did my second box first. The new GPUGRID AMD app is a particular focus of mine, if that seems ok, and hope sounds are starting to be heard in these (very) early days on that one, then I'll probably stay AMD/7990 So we'll see how it pans out, but if the software side of 79XX relating to BOINC still looks problematic end of March, then I am heading for Kepler as long as NVidia come up with the goods ..... 2012 gonna be fun ..... :) Regards Zy |

Well all my Box's are purely BOINC Box's & I wanted the 7970's for the MOO Project, if their not going to work here then I'm not sure I want them. Can use them at Milkyway I guess but right now I'm not really wanting to run Milkyway & so far they don't seem to work at none of the other ATI Projects either ... |

I would say external to Moo & Milkyway, they will all be AMD/OpenCL with all the current speed issues of the new OpenCL implementation at AMD, see what GPUGRID come up with. Of all the Projects - from a development view - GPUGRID will I suspect come up with an AMD winner as they have been planning and aiming at the GNU application for many months. The unknown is how that GNU architecture will perform in the very complex GPUGRID environemnt given the shift AMD are making - could be GPUGRID end up shelving it until software matures more, way too early for earnest specualtion, too much water to go under the bridge. I dont think they will, they have planned on a native OpenCL app from the start, see what happens I guess. Regards Zy |

He very well may do .... Collatz has always been the premier sea of calm inside the BOINC maelstrom. Nice Project to go to if you want a respite to recharge the 'ol BOINC batteries before launching back into the tempest of BOINCLand :) He runs a good Project, so guaranteed if he goes for one, it will be a solid good performer. He's a stand up guy who calls it how it is .... that defenitely works for me ... I detest the ego driven hype syndromes that fly around. Regards Zy |

Nice Project to go to if you want a respite to recharge the 'ol BOINC batteries before launching back into the tempest of BOINCLand :) A note posted at Collatz: I released the OS X app first because there was no AMD support for OS X. That being said, I actually created the app on Windows first because I prefer VS 2010 over XCode as an IDE. So yes, there is a Windows OpenCL version that runs on both nVidia and AMD. Performance is lousy compared to the Brook+/CAL app though. So, I'll have to come up with a way so that if the GPU supports CAL, the server will send it the ATI app and if not, will send the OpenCL app. |

Hello, I heard that an upstream dev has actually managed to get D.net Client run on a 7970 device. They just needed to compile it with a newer SDK as there seems to have been somekind of incompatible change AMD has made. :( This means that once they get a that version compiled and available, we can pick it up and support 7970 cards as well. No idea when that happens yet, so don't hold your breath but at least it's coming sooner than later. :) -w |

Nice One - that'll be interesting having another mainstream app for the 7970, any idea what its written in etc ? Needless to say ... but if you need some pre-alpha testing PM me, I'll help. Thats welcome news - Mucho Gracias :) Regards Zy |

Nice One - that'll be interesting having another mainstream app for the 7970, any idea what its written in etc ? AFAIK, it's still the same client with same AMD CAL cores just compiled with newer SDK from AMD that can target the newer devices. So it's not an OpenCL one.. And thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind if I see we can do something to push things along with upstream devs. :) -w |
