I just built myself a brand new pc, is an AMD X6 1090T 302ghz cpu on an ASRock 990FX Exterme4 motherboard with 16 gig of ram. The OS is 64 bit Win7 Ultimate, it SCREAMS, I have several quad core pc's but this is MUCH faster!! I put a 750 Watt Antec psu in it and an AMD 5770 gpu. It is crunching WCG, 6 units at once, and Moo, 1 unit at a time of course. The strange thing is my other six 5770's take about an hour to finish one unit, this pc is only taking about 30 minutes!!! WHY???? ALL units are coming up as Valid so it's not like they are bad or anything. Here is one of the units: http://moowrap.net/result.php?resultid=6491263

You can see it got Credit 2,219.50 and Run time 1,005.86 and CPU time 8.36.

It seems that you're getting shorter workunits in the new box.....

Your credit equates to my less capable HD 4770 although it takes 32 minutes to get it. My HD 5770 gets the longer 8,000 or so tasks (takes about an hour).

Didn't I read somewhere (sometime) that the server needs to get to know you before sending the longer tasks? I'm getting old and my memory was the second thing to go...sigh.

Edit: I'm jealous of your new machine (as if you weren't getting enough credit already). We're on the same team so I'm allowed to say this :)

I agree Purple.

Whenever I think of possibly purchasing an additional ATI GPU, Mikey ups the ante with Christmas pressies and wins on his personal lottery.

I think I'll go back to sleep.

I hate this kind of information Mr M.

But I enjoy that you are happy with this PC. I agree with the other gentlemen that you will have bigger WU´s after a while. I had the same experience when I changed to my new ATI-card. It will increase after a while I guess.

Cheers from Sweden.

The clue is in the last number of the WU ... _110_193

110 is the temporary norm indicator of fragmentated WUs, and the 193 the usual Stat Unit size indicator. The huge WUs are 768 compared to 193.

The server will settle and uprate the WU size once its got used to what the beast can do.

I found with the 1090T that it pays to leave a core "free" if using one of the CPU hungry driver versions. I use PRPNet or the Clean Energy Project Phase 2 at WCG for that on the 1090T on my second box, as you get precise per CPU Core control over what is loaded and crunched.

Worth looking at, especially CEP2, as it has excellent control mechanism inside its preferences for precise control over the number of Cores it uses. PRPNet effectively does a similar control service but by accident rather than design as you use DOS boxes - it does take circa 2 weeks for the PRPNet credits to flow through to BOINC, but they do flow even is delayed sometimes on conversion. CEP2 has no such issues as its a standard BOINC level Project in WU terms. CEP2 needs 1.5Gb memory free to service 5 WUs, so be careful on that in relation to the overall call on main stream memory - other than that CEP2 does not tax the 1090T particularly hard, so its a nice one to run on a 1090T.

Purple the key is to tell everyone you just want cash for Christmas! I got $350 in cash and $50 in gift cards, which I promptly sold to my wife for face value! I ALSO got two AMD 5870's for Christmas, and on my own, pre Christmas, bought two other AMD 5870 gpu's. The new gpu's mean other gpu's are now on the shelf, but two of the AMD 5770's will end up in the new machine, one already is. The new X6 was purchased as parts that I installed in a case I already owned along with the other parts that were repurposed from other machines. EVERY TIME someone has a pc to get rid of I take it, usually I end up scavenging it for parts but sometimes I get major things I can use in my own machines. I have a large stack of cd and dvd drives, one of the dvd/rw's, which was still shrink wrapped, is now inside my X6! As is a 500GB Sata drive!

Thanks to everyone for their advice, the longer units are now here and running just fine. I will let it settle down and see how long they take.

Zydor as far as WCG goes I am trying to get all of my projects up over the 2 year mark and am working on Fight Aids and Fight childhood Cancer right now, I am over 1 year but still have 150 days or so to go on each, then I can work on the longer projects like Go Fight Malaria and Drug Search for Lesmanis(sp).

I'd be interested to know - once all is settled down for you re the new box - how well behaved those WGC Projects you listed are on the 1090T in terms of effect on the Moo WU, if concurrently running with Moo, all six cores with those particular WGC Project WUs. Not run those yet, but will do at some point so would be nice to know the effect on 1090T/Moo.

Just to end this thread because Mikey is now happy I'll mention my Christmas gift. Look out Mikey, I (and a million others) got a Kindle Fire! Santa couldn't read my mind for wanting a double hexagonal quad with 16 GPUs...sigh.

OK, I've duct taped the Kindle to the side of the computer, but darned if I know how to hook it up. I know it'll do great things, but the wires don't match :)

Maybe I should have been more specific about my Christmas gift? I guess I'll just read a book. Can I get credit for that? :)

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents here. I run both WCG HCMD2 and Moo! and I haven't noticed any change with all 8 threads running WCG or having a free thread. I didn't notice any time differences in my Moo! wu, so I just keep all 8 running. I did run the benchmark and set the fastest core as well. Of course I'm running a 2600k and not a 1090T so it's not exactly helpful :)

Thanks for that - my main machine is a 3960X so that was a useful comparitor.

Mikey is now EXTRA HAPPY!!! I went to the local computer show yesterday and sold off the last of my older memory sticks, I got $400 CASH for them!!!! I still have some REALLY old ones he didn't want. I now have enough to go out and buy ANOTHER X6 system!! BUT before I do that my son gave me one of those wattage testers for Christmas, I have it on the X6 right now and at full load it is using about 306 watts. I say about because it seems to fluctuate between 306 and 301 every few seconds, anyway I am going to plug it into an older dual core and see how much it uses, it could be cheaper to replace it then to get another gpu.

Oh and Purple have you ever heard of NewsGroups? If not give me a PM and maybe we can talk about them. They would be OT here.

I'd think about getting a SSD for the C: drive on the 1090T. The Corsair Force 3 GT 180Gb or especially the Corsair Performance Pro 256GB. Good drives that have excellent balance between perfromance and cost. Its a well worthwhile longer term investment transferable to any machine as you progress through rebuilds.

I started using an SSD on my main box a month ago - brilliant, its like being in a new world - the PC and applications think their birthday came early. I would recommend investing in Diskeeper Pro Premier with Hyperfast ( http://www.diskeeper.com )if you go that route, as the latter will very significantly cut down on disk I/O which is the great enemy of SSDs - the latter being the yardstick by which the life of an SSD is held hostage to.

Still need the existing mechanical drives for data storage, but putting windows and programs on an SSD is like being sent to heaven rofl :)

Yeah I put a 60gb SSD drive in my netbook a while back and it now screams!! But they are still too expensive for me as a retired guy pursuing a hobby, the prices have dropped a ton since I bought the drive for the netbook, by 50% so far, and I am sure they still have a ways to go. I think I will wait a bit more and then give myself a nice present one day with a speed and reliability increase!

Okay new problem same pc....I added a 2nd 5770 to my new X6 and the crunch times have DOUBLED or even TRIPLED!!! I checked in the Messages section and BOTH cards are found on Boinc startup, but the finish times have gone from 1 hour to 2 hours or even longer!! Yes I did put the cc_config.xml file thing to use all the gpu's and it says that it found that. Here is a link to the tasks of that pc:
http://moowrap.net/results.php?hostid=8022 most tasks are coming thru as valid they are just taking FOREVER!!!
What gives?

Okay I did a little testing...I aborted all Moo units and got new ones, suspended WCG and the units had a to complete guesstimate of 15 minutes each. I re-enabled WCG and the to complete time soared, so the pc IS being held back by the 6 at a time crunching of the WCG HFCC units. I switched to DSFL units at WCG and will see how they do, I did not abort any almost completed HFCC units so it will take a couple of hours to see how it does now. HMMMMMM
