Returned to the 4+K second WUs on the HD5850. This has been going on for nearly a day now.

Reset project twice, no change and done a detach then reattach, still running 4,250 second WUs. Even with the processor usage adjusted from 4 to 9, no improvement.

Not sure is this is just a bunch of super huge WUs, especially as the HD5970 is showing no signs of increased times.

Just luck.

John these are my last 3 units validated using a 5850 and a setting of 9 as you suggested:

It looks like yours is the only one! That pc is a quad core AMD 9600 and all 4 cores are crunching WCG units at the same time. It has 2 gig of ram and is running 64bit Win7 Ultimate, it only has 2 memory slots and I do not have any 2 gig ram pieces. It is a Boinc ONLY machine. Here is a link to the machine:

HEY JOHN I JUST noticed something on the Server Status page:

Work Total Tiny Small Normal Huge
Tasks ready to send

1,860 224 243 707 686

I wonder if you are just getting bigger units than I am?!

Cannot say Mikey, but now the satellite broadband is back (some troubles yesterday and today knocked out the UK).

I see the WUs are now back to the usual 2,250 second odd range. It looked like the number of WUs in the cache (0.25 days) needed to be worked through.

It seems like I am the only HD5850 here that gets this occasional problem.

It's really annoying.

Hello,

If it helps at all, you are not alone with mysterious longer WUs as there has been other reports too. :)

Symptoms seem to point to a strange behaviour of the D.Net ATI Stream client that might get triggered with certain work units fed to them. ATI driver bug or interference from some other program may be in play here too.. Unfortunately, that's not my code (and I'm by no mean fluent ATI Stream programmer, yet) so it's hard to debug quickly what's happening here. :(

Thanks Teemu.

At least I am not alone, and the longer WUs do seem to correct themselves after a while.

G'day all,

I am having the same problems - my dual (not in crossfire setup) in that when I first hooked this machine up, WU's were actually taking around 7500 seconds or so.

After changing the core to 3, the actual run time is down to around 4200 seconds, BUT, it is reporting times of 7900 - 8000 seconds !!!!

I have another i7-920 with dual 4770's in it and they do a WU in average of 3700 seconds, and report the correct times.

I will try the change of processor usage priority as advised and see if that helps, but why on earth is it reporting such crazy time differences to what the actual crunch time was ???

All help greatly appreciated,

Veebee

One thing dual cards do is wait for the 1st card to finish before both cards get the next unit, so if one card is slower than the other that could be what you are seeing. This happens when both cards work on the same unit, as they do here.

I was interested in seeing the reduction in times for single and multiple GPUs of the same make and series. For example -

A single HD5850 crunches a WU in about 2,250 seconds (or times arount that).

A dual card, like an HD5970, crunches a WU in about 1,050 seconds (about hald the HD5850).

When a pair of HD5970 come together then WU crunching drops to 450 seconds (see Zydor's AMD 6 core).

OK folks we have solved it at long last.

GPUZ was lying to me. I apparently had a corrupted CCC Control centre that had re-set the Card to 50% GPU core speed. Downloaded the latest CCC and we are now back to being AOK on crunching times. I feel quite embarrassed that I didn't catch what was wrong sooner.

Watch out John, I'm chasing again ... ;-)

Thanks Mikey - could well be the problem, but:

I had dual 4770's and they ran WU's at around the 2000 second mark, one having higher available clock speeds etc (but I DID have them set via MSI afterburner to be at same settings etc)

I will try afterburner on the other i7 and see if having "second card" set to mirror values of First card helps,
then I suppose, all I can do is try running one only 5850.

problem is that John Clarks post (# 1321) states WU processing time dropping CRAZILY when running a dual 5970 (someone elses machine).

Will try the above as I have done all other adjustments re: core selection, processor usage etc.

fingers crossed !!

Dual cards seem to have problems on many projects not just here. I've found that Moo Wrapper is not happy without plenty of access to CPU time. I have upped the percentage to 300% project resource share now.

Currently getting 2,096 secs for 7,038 cr on a 5850.

Hello, can some one help me please ? I have HD5850 and have problem with huge WU crunching time. I read this thread, but it don´t works.

I am using Win 7 64-bit SP1, using Catalyst 11.11 (11-11_vista64_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe) downloaded from AMD.com. I use catalyst 11.9, but have same problem. Some WU works correctly, but some one not. My graphic card working 99% usage with no underclock. If you will see some WU have 1,747.81 Mkeys/s it is correct. But some one are slowly 447,851,176 keys/s.

There is my validate WU´s with good time and very long time. Please help me :)

I think you need to find out what other processes are running at the same time.
Moo need some CPU time to be able to process. If other processes are occupying then the processtime for GPU will be longer. Make a test and run only MOO and see what happens. Then start one other crunch for an other project and see what happens. So it is trial and error that will help you. I can see that you have had GPU processes with an average of 30 minutes for an WU wich is ok for your card. Check Chris S comments in this thread.

Over at Collatz some people are saying version 11.11 of the software is causing them problems, while going back to 11.10 seemed to fix them.

Hi Gigadisk.

Your results were very similar to what I was getting, and it looks to me that Moo! isn't getting enough CPU time. Make sure you have the CPU priority set to 9 instead of the default 4, and try upping the Project resource share to 300.

Also check via GPU-Z or Catalyst Control Centre whether your GPU core clock is at the nominal setting. The Memory clock can be dropped to 400-500 Mhz to save heat and power.

I'm no expert, I just know what works for me. Hope this helps.

I don´t crunch Collatz(now), and i don´t have problem with other projects. I test Catalist 10.3 10.11 11.6 11.9 11.11 (I use Driver Sweeper for uninstall all ATI drivers) with same results.

I have set priority to 9, now i am set resource share to 300. I check core clock with GPU-z. I am using MSI afterburner for overclock my HD5850 (core clock 850MHz/300MHz Memory for less power and better temperature). I have Core i-7 920 and use all 8 threads for CPU projects so i will pause other projets for testing and tell if some one works.
