Message 1024 - Posted: 12 Sep 2011, 11:05:00 UTC

I started a new server running Win7 64 on a i7.
I noticed in task manager the cpu usage of dnetc518-win32-x86.exe on Cat 11.5> is 25% !
Grading down to cat 11.3 helped a bit and it dropped down to 12% with a 25% spike now & then.
Will there be a fix for the 64bit os. I noticed there is only one application for windows 32 & 64.
Again I had to lift the cpu priority from 4 to 9 in the .ini file & change the multiprocessor % in Boinc manager's preferences to use only 90% processors (7 cores)
Without this all other running cpu tasks starve the GPU to use cpu power to do it's thing & GPU activity drops below 50% causing a wu to run twice as long

Hi,

Do you think that the old BOINC version can influence to your problem?

I just aborted 7 ati14 tasks that started, jumped to 17% completed and hung, using 99% of gpu and overheating it. Moo has always run fine on my rig, this is the first time I've had problems. Just upgraded to 64 bit, but moo ran fine for a while after the change. Bad wu's, or a systemic problem?

Thanks for the suggestion Brent but the way I have it is that Boinc manager is only the agent doing the queuing of the jobs.
The dnetc....exe app is doing the crunching & the .ini file deciding what should happen
Do I have it wrong?

I have a i7 950 with a HD6850 ATI. I did change the processor in my set up for Moo from -1 to processor 3. That did the trick for me. I freed the cpu and a general GPY WU take approx 5 % of the CPU. May be you check this out.

Dig,

Are you sure that the GPU is running at the process of the WU?
I had the problem that the GPU went down to 110Mhz and the CPU % arose to a very high procentage. Do you have downloaded GPU-Z to see how the GPU is acting?

I tried the stream test to see what GPU core is the best.
Changed it to core 3 that is a bit slower than core 0 in the test but no change in CPU usage.
I'm using GPU-Z as well as Afterburner to see the GPU load

I get the same high CPU load on my 32 bit rigs when I use Catalyst 11.6 >

I will try a lower 64 bit release tomorrow & see if it helps

EDIT

VIVA XP !!!!!!!!

I tried everything I can think of but with no effect
The DNETC app is still running at between 12 - 25% CPU
This is 2 cores on an i7 !

Teemu please help

The Dnetc project is not doing this & is running @ max 2%

Update to catalyst 11.9... that one fixed the high cpu load issue for me.

That does sound normal to me. If everything is running fine, the GPU usage should be around 99% but that can cause overheating if the cards cooling system is not up to the task (or it's hot in the room so there's no cool air coming in). By using cards to their full speed is why we get such a good throughput from them.

The jump to 17% completed percentage (although, it shouldn't be 0% first) can also happen, especially with the smaller WUs that have fewer packets (the percentage is updated only for each completed and in progress packet). It's hung only if it didn't complete next packet at all during the time they usually get completed.

I have this problem too. I was surprised, when I noticed that Moo Wrapper task dnetc.... using near 50% of my CPU.

Because I want to donate my CPU time for projects, which have no GPU interface, I'll go to Collatz while Moo Administrators not solve or not explain how to solve high CPU usage problem...

Hmm, that last fact probably rules out many environmental differences but one thing you could verify is if the Dnetc Project uses the same client version (we use the latest 518-build) and what core they use on your system to achieve that.

These high-cpu issues can certainly be mysterious to debug with many things affecting each other. :(

I tried 11.99 on 3 PCs in different locations - but no improvement - still 25% usage. My GPU's run cool @ 65 - 70 deg C

and what core they use on your system to achieve that

Normally the default core setting -1 for core 0 is the fastest for me.
I even experimented to force the normally slowest cores 1 & 2 but with no effect on the CPU usage

I think the answer is at ATI/AMD & find out what they changed in release 11.6 >

Perhaps the code on DNETC can now be checked since they have decided to close up shop.
I don't know what the different optimizations are between the two projects but there is a difference.

My ATI 5870 cards on DNETC I get from 1 to 5 seconds of CPU usage during a work unit.
On Moo I get anything from 15 seconds to 60 seconds, quite a large difference.

So from 0.5% or less CPU usage for DNETC
To 1.5% up to 6.25% CPU usage on Moo.

That is what I have seen. I have not upgraded my drivers for quite a while.
