21) Message boards : Number crunching : Can't get BOINC to download work (Message 1300)
Posted 1 Nov 2011 by Conan
Post:
Over the past many months every now and then I have found that BOINC manager/client refuses to request new work even when it runs out of work to process and just sits there idle. I usually have to reboot the machine to get it to ask for more work.

Now this has been mainly a GPU issue and the CPUs keep chugging away and request new work when needed.

Starting yesterday Both my Windows computers that are running Moo stopped asking for new work at about the same time and both later ran out of work.

I waited for BOINC to request more but if it did it just said "Not Requesting New Work" or "No Work Available", "Got Zero new tasks".
If I manually update I get the same message.
If I Reset the computer (either one) still get the same message.

Keeps saying Not requesting Work when it has none and plenty is available.
CPU work keeps requesting work and getting it, just not the GPU.

Mostly stopping and restarting BOINC Manager/Client gets things rolling again, work downloads and it then keeps asking for work and getting it for a week or more before doing it again.
However I sometimes have to reboot to get work flowing again.

So yesterday I upgraded one of the computers from 6.10.58 (which all of my computers have) to 6.12.34 to see if that would fix the problem.
I got work and it was running fine.

It only lasted less than one day and then the new Boinc Client started doing the same thing again.
It ran out of work again and refused to download more.
I reset the project but nothing changed.
I detached (removed) the Project and reattached (added) Moo back again and after at first not downloading it then downloaded 100 work units, which it is now processing.

But even after all this it has not improved with both computers still not downloading any new work at all, so as my cache drops down no more is downloaded to replace it.

I am running out of work yet again.

This all seems to have started with the server upgrade the other day, as I hardly had any real problems until about yesterday (when I noticed it, could of started before this as I had a full cache and noticed it when it did not replenish).

I have checked all settings on both the computers and the project fixing anything I thought may help, but it all seems normal just not working.

I am going away this Friday for a week and it looks like I may have to switch to another project in order to maintain work levels as MOO does not work any more.

22) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : wu in error - no protocol specified (Message 1271)
Posted 28 Oct 2011 by Conan
Post:
From the str messages on the WU, it seems that the project is not able to detect your card.
It says the detected processors (on the card) is 0.

As it can't find the cards processors it quits and then tries again for a total of 10 attempts before quitting the WU and giving back an error.

Check your driver install to see if that is a problem or check your preference settings for the Moo!Wrapper project and see if a setting is not right.

Strangely BOINC can detect the card but the project can't.

Perhaps the code on DNETC can now be checked since they have decided to close up shop.
I don't know what the different optimizations are between the two projects but there is a difference.

My ATI 5870 cards on DNETC I get from 1 to 5 seconds of CPU usage during a work unit.
On Moo I get anything from 15 seconds to 60 seconds, quite a large difference.

So from 0.5% or less CPU usage for DNETC
To 1.5% up to 6.25% CPU usage on Moo.

That is what I have seen. I have not upgraded my drivers for quite a while.

Very nice mikey, very nice.. Congrats to All..Conan You Too..

Thanks SLAYER OF DEATH,
I left to do Collatz for a while then PrimeGrid, but with Primegrid ATI cards are on the lower end of performance, will have to get an Nvidia card to compete with over there.
So I came back to where my cards perform the best and have now passed 115,000,000 using just 1 computer and 2 cards here at the moment.

Congratulations to you SLAYER for your 50 MILLION and 130 MILLION overall.

Bernt a few more days and you will have your 10 MILLION.

Mikey, I thought it was too good to be true that I could pass you and slip well ahead. I am only 4 million in front and you will catch me again in a few days.

AHHGH, more computers, need more computers, Graphics cards, need more Graphics cards, money, money, I really need more MONEY.

What's the advantage of changing the CPU priority from 4 to 9.
Mine is still set to 4 and other than using more CPU than DNETC (between 20 and 40 sec compared to just 1 to 5 sec), the system is running OK.

Thanks

Hi,

First of all, thanks a lot for your donations! I do appreciate them. :)

I don't mind unless you want a refund of your extra donation. ;) The graphs on the donation page are more for informational/statistical purposes. All payments will be used to fund next monthly server payment I make.

I'll see if I can make the donation page default to current/next month and possibly to remove the months that are "ready". It does seem only way to remove items from that is to actually delete them from DB, which is not that nice. :( It does seem this area of BOINC Server web code would need a bit work..

Thanks Teemu,

No need to change anything, I just didn't select the right box. No matter a bit extra towards upkeep. Besides I am now the 4th highest donor.
All is well and keep up the good work.

Conan

Sorry for anyone wondering how I was the 4th highest donor. I confused DNECT and MOO as I donated to both on the same night.
DNECT has a display showing the top 10 donors and even though I donated more to MOO I have no idea where I stand on the donation list as MOO does not have a list for me to see where I am.

Sorry about that.

Last night (30/9/11 here in Oz), being the last day of September and seeing that no donations had been given to the project for the month I decided to donate the whole month of 100 Euros to cover September's costs.

Well I did not change the month selection and even though August had 64% paid for already it suddenly had 100% paid for now didn't it?

I then had to add another 50 Euros to September to do what I wanted in the first place.

So 150 Euros donated even if that is not originally what I was going to do.
Lucky Moo!Wrapper is all I can say.

I doubt that Teemu minds

You little rippa 100,000,000 cobblestones on MOO!WRAPPER

My second project to go past 100 million (DNETC and now MOO) and the 7th person on this project.

I could not of imagined this sort of output 4 years ago.

Congratulations to all, and their respective Milestones.

Thanks Zy, that makes sense.

I will work on the slow processing times on one machine in particular. Doing a defrag now as the poor hard drive was very fragmented and I will defrag the other machine for good measure even though it does not need it.

Post:
It would appear that ALL my work units behave this way.

Process and load packets into r72 and says that "10 (or 12) packets loaded into r72"
Then continues onto 11 (or 13) and then 12 (or 14), saying that packet limit has been exceeded after the first extra packet has been processed but still does another one anyway.

So appears to be normal behaviour but still seems odd when only a set number of packets have been loaded at the start of the WU but extra packets are processed.

As they weren't originally loaded are the extra ones actually processed?

Yes I run CPU projects on all cores. Both Windows computers are running the same mix of projects which very often changes.
At the moment they are running Moo!Wrapper, Einstein, DistributedDataMining, Ralph (when available), WUProp and Surveill.
The last two are Non CPU intensive.
Running 32 bit and only 3 to 4 GB available memory I think I am pushing the limits of my computers as memory is often a problem.

Thanks for the reply Zy.

Conan.

Post:
Why is it that a work unit initialises with 12 Packets but nearly always processes 14 Packets and gets the error that it has exceeded Packet Limit?

Could this be the reason that some of my work units often run for 2,500 to 3,100 seconds when they should be running 850 to 1,400 seconds ?
(I have one computer that whose RAC is dropping very fast because of the random very long running work units).

34) Questions and Answers : Windows : What do i need to run MooWrapper? (Message 830)
Posted 24 Jul 2011 by Conan
Post:
I found that I had to change the Core back from #3 to #0 as it was causing one computer to run slow but the other to run a little bit faster.

Back at Core #0 the times are speeding up on one machine and staying where they were on the other, in other words back to normal for me.

Post:
I run 2xATI 5870 in each of two AMD Phenom machines (one x4 and one x6), both on Win XP 32 bit.

My run times on Core #0 was anywhere from 950 sec (15.8 min) to 2,200 sec (36.6 min) on either machine, I have not worked out why the different run times or if it was when I was using the machine for something else at the times of the long run times. The majority of times are around 1,080 sec (18 min) to 1,320 sec (22 min).

A day or so ago I changed to Core #3 and so far my run times have been from 850 sec (14.2 min) to 1900 sec (31.7 min) with the majority of times around 1,020 sec (17 min) to 1,260 sec (21 min).

So a little better but not all that much.

It would also appear in my case that running out of memory or at least running low on available memory can make a huge difference in run times.

When running up to 3 or 4 Yoyo Euler work units or Ralph work units or Cosmology work units, which are all memory hungry programmes, my computers become slow or unresponsive and consequently ALL work units, be they CPU or GPU, would slow right down and take up to double the normal run times.

This is the reason I think for my long GPU run times.

This may be of help for others.

If your e-mail is the same on all projects then they will align in due time.
If you have more than one computer then it helps if at least one project is common across more than one of the computers.

But the CPIDs should correlate after a few days to maybe a week or so.

There are different size work units available, the 102 point ones only have 12 stat units in them, the 6,800 point ones have about 768 stat units in them.

So at 8.5 points per stat unit 102 points is correct for a 12 stat unit work unit.

Hey Clod, looks like Blackheeler has been given CPU credit on a GPU work unit, both work units got 102 credits. Validator issue I believe.

Unfortunately no, if anything it is now worse than before. I am now guessing at some of the titles, including the Forum one.

Thanks for the efforts though.
