Message 5616 - Posted: 4 Nov 2013, 12:43:29 UTC - in response to Message 5615.

what´s all the nagging about? I´m winning!

I am WINNING too, also with NO snow!!!

Also here there is no snow. Winning and waiting snow.

Since you are 'waiting' for the snow I will hope ALL of any snow coming my way goes your way instead!! In my area if we get a 4 inch snow storm the WHOLE PLACE shuts down for several days!!! We got 18 inches of snow 20 years ago and were shut down for almost 2 weeks!!! People around here abandon their cars in the middle of the hiway in rain storms because they can! In snow storms they often abandon their cars right in the middle of the road and take off walking to who knows where, causing HUGE backups!!!

Why this? Did not people know the following things: Winter tires and snow plow?

We only get snow about once every 2 or 3 years and even then it is usually just a coupe of inches, mostly on the grassy areas, and then it is gone. That happens a couple of times to give us our grand total of like 3 inches average snow fall per year. Meaning people have to relearn how to drive in bad weather every 5 years of so when we get a 'big one'. Most people around here have never even heard of 'snow tires', in fact some of the videos you see of people driving at 90 mph on the snow and sliding sideways are from around here. People just have no clue and it is best to just stay out of there way by staying home.

When I was a firefighter there was this very foggy morning and we had a call on the local divided hi-way for an accident. We got there and you could barely see 20 feet in front of you so we parked the fire engine almost 200 feet prior to the accident just so people didn't hit us. Some lady comes barreling thru at 65mph almost hitting us before hitting several other cars and coming to a stop. The first thing she did when her car stopped is she got out and yelled 'what are you guys doing stopped here, don't you realize this is a hi-way?' The cop arrested her on the spot and sent her away to jail!! She just had no clue of what might happen when you can't see the road in front of you!!

WINNING!!!

Aah. Now i understand much better.

Winning!!!

I don't mean to portray EVERYONE as a bad driver, we have lots of people from places that get lots of snow and they do very well, but Washington DC, which is 25 miles North of me, gets very little snow and thus very little experience for most people to get the time to figure things out. In the Summer it will get into the 100+ degree range for a few days, this past summer I think it did it 9 times. Mostly it is in the mid 90's with 80+ humidity on the worst Summer days. This past Winter it got below freezing twice and that was for a total of 5 days! I live here because the temps are sorta kinda middle of the road, not blazingly hot like further down in the 'deep' Southern parts of the US, where near 100F is common on alot of days! Nor does it get freezing cold for long stretches of time, it will get below freezing one day and then be back into the 50's the next day. A stretch of 5 days in a row below freezing is a LONG stretch for me!!

Washington DC itself has just over a million people, several Counties around it also have well over a million people, lots of those people commute to work inside DC, so that is the problem when it snows. Then throw in all the other smaller cities, counties and towns and you get alot of people all on the move every morning going to work and every evening going home again. The Federal Government brings in alot of people from out of town to do business here, but a surprising number of people are born, grow up and die here in the 'Washington DC Metro area'. We also have several Military Bases close too, they have a large turnover of people, bring in people from all over, including those from snowier places who laugh and have alot of fun at the expense of those having troubles in the snow and other bad weather events.

I am retired, so no more commuting for me, and WINNING!!!

LOTS of us know how to drive in the snow, making you not winning anymore. I used to ride a moped in the snows of Alaska, now THAT is fun!!

Mopeds meant freedom from sitting at home with the parents and not having to bug them to take me someplace!! I WAS forced to wear a helmet everywhere I went and it DID feel silly sometimes, but I DID wear it.

I got my drivers licence early 1962. At that time you also got a licence for driving a motorbicycle. 2013 you need to take a special test to get a licence for a motorbike. My wife bought a kawasaki a couple of years ago. She had trained a couple o hours with a teacher. Anyhow she didn´t feel comfortable about biking. One of those days I borrowed her bike, her leathertrousers, jacket and helmet and off I went. I drowe off on the small roads not far from our summerhouse. After a couple kilometers I stopped för turning back. I saw in my backmirror a huge white light and suddenly quite a lot of bikers passed me. It was surely about hundred of them passing. One guy stopped and asked If I had any trouble with my engine. I said no, but I had a problem to cross the road. He told me to drive safely. I did and I returned home. This was my first experience with a motorbike and also my last. My wife sold her bike later on. I sort of missed the bike, but I guess her decision was correct. Now I know that I will win!

I agree AND I have to buy fuel for it, not just let the car find it's own. But it sure is nicer when it is cold! Less bumpy and no attitude either!

I live just outside a major metropolitan area, about 20+ miles South of Washington DC, so have access to anything and everything I need. Even the non stop traffic, which I don't need. But it means having a horse is not practical for me, so I have a car, two actually. One for me and one for my wife as we often go in different directions at the same time.
